Why I am in love with Africa

My husband and I were attending a church when Tom Eggum from hope4kids international came to speak about the need in Uganda. We decided to sponsor a young man: Allen Edward. We call him Eddie and were able to meet him when we went to Uganda for the first time in 2005. I have been there 5 additional times. I feel that I was called there for a purpose. I lived in Bogota, Columbia when I was 8 years old and have wanted to save the world ever since. I think this may be my chance to make a difference in a place that is far away. The people in Uganda are gracious, kind, patient and live to be about 47 years old. Women die in childbirth because they deliver in huts alone, sometimes without even their husband in attendance. I was in Uganda 1 week after a woman delivered triplets in a hut. I was there one day when a woman delivered a premature baby on the path to the clinic. I really want to do something to help these wonderful people live healthier lives. So my wonderful friends: Lylaine, Marianne, Edna and Liz are accompanying me to help me teach Home Based Life Saving Skills. We will be teaching health workers where we are going how to teach people in the villages to recognize problems during pregnancy, birth, and in the neonatal period. This teaching has been done in other places in the world and makes a big difference.
